Cultural Capital

Cultural Capital at Alfriston Primary School

Every child and family who joins our school will have their own knowledge and experiences that will link to their culture and wider family. This might include languages, beliefs, traditions, cultural and family heritage, interests, travel and work.

Cultural capital is the accumulation of knowledge, behaviours, and skills that a child can draw upon and which demonstrates their cultural awareness, knowledge and competence; it is one of the key ingredients a child will draw upon to be successful in society, their career and the world of work.

Cultural capital gives power. It helps children achieve goals, become successful, and rise up the social ladder without necessarily having wealth or financial capital. Cultural capital is having assets that give children the desire to aspire and achieve social mobility whatever their starting point.

Cultural Capital to Complement Academic Progress and Success

At Alfriston Primary School, we are committed to developing children's wider development to complement their academic progress and success. Children are given a wide range of experiences and opportunities to further enrich their time at our school.

Our curriculum is designed to instill high aspirations in all of our children and to encourage them to become resilient, life-long learners who embrace challenges and aspire to become well-rounded, conscientious global citizens.

Children in all year groups participate in a wide range of off-site visits each academic year. These visits are designed to support wider curriculum learning; stimulating their curiosity and encourage children to make links and connections with previous learning.

Our long-established residential trips are open to children in Year 5/6 and children in Year 2 enjoy an overnight stay, camping in the school hall - these overnight visits encourage greater independence, develop personal resilience and broaden children's horizons.

Some of the off-site visits and workshops the children have enjoyed over the past year are:
